My husband and I have talked about replacing the table in our home, but I cannot help that I feel attached to our old special piece of IKEA furniture. It’s a reminder of all the places we’ve called home; it holds memories of holiday feasts, lengthy dinners, and a million quick meals. It is a place where old friends have gathered and new friends were made. It has been an invitation to share life with anyone and everyone God brought to our home and, most importantly, it has been a place where we have felt the presence of the Lord in the deepest of ways. In Scripture we see the table as a place where God dwells with and provides for His people.
I just experienced my first lunch duty assignment and let’s just say, the cafeteria tables do not bring that same warm fuzzy feeling. I found myself anxiously watching the students as they walked in scanning the room to see if anyone would take them in. Would there be a seat? Not just any seat but a place where they would feel safe, comfortable, accepted or, best of all, actually wanted. We all know that feeling. In fact, I think we have all at some point approached God’s table with insecurity and apprehension.
My plea with you today is to boldly accept God’s invitation to join him as the host of the table. Invite people to experience the presence of Christ through the welcoming community of FRCS. Invite people to share a table, either in your home or in the cafeteria. Let’s be committed to enjoying His fellowship, meaningful conversations and inviting all to sit around the table.
If I have not had the chance to meet you yet, my name is Aubren Self, and I am the new college guidance counselor here at FRCS. As I pray over this next year and this new role God has me in, I am reminded that while giftedness and education do matter, the fruits of the Spirit are foundational. May we walk alongside these students as they develop their view of self and find their footing in the world.
