The Life of Jesus
“Jesus did many other things as well. If every one of them were written down, I suppose that even the whole world would not have room for the books that would be written.”
(John 21:25, NIV)
The closing line of the Gospel of John reminds us of a basic truth: there is much to learn about Jesus. The gospels themselves, along with the rest of scripture, grant us a selection of the life of Jesus: prominent stories, famous teachings, and meaningful interactions. But even these inspired texts don’t include everything Jesus did. What they do provide is what we believe to be a divinely cultivated depiction of the person and teachings of Jesus as he walked this earth. In the stories of his birth, life, death, and resurrection we get to observe God incarnate – how he spoke and prayed, what he chose to do, and who he spent time with. Simply put, as we determine how to live a life that honors God we get to read of how Jesus chose to live when he walked among us.
This year, our school theme is centered around the life of Jesus. When you remove the biblical accounts of Passion Week and Jesus’ birth from the four gospels, you are still left with 56 chapters about Jesus’ life, ministry, and teachings. While we certainly won’t get to all of these chapters in the 2024/2025 school year, we will sink deeply into them. Our hope is that as we look closely at Jesus, our own words, choices, and interactions will grow in alignment with those of Christ. May our lives bear an increasingly sharp resemblance to the life of Jesus.
