Mission Field. What does that mean? Does it mean that we must live overseas to be on the mission field? I lived in Honduras as a missionary kid from 7th grade thru 12th grade. Before I started my 7th grade year, my parents accepted teaching jobs in Tegucigalpa, Honduras and they moved our family of five there to work and minister to Hondurans (It’s honestly an amazing testament of God working through our family’s life circumstances at the time; if you’re interested, ask me about it sometime). As a teenager, I thought this was it meant to do mission work: that you had to go overseas to be seen as a missionary and minister to others.
Once I graduated high school in Honduras, I came back to the States for college. After college, I got married, and my wife and I moved to Colorado. Because I loved those six years in Honduras so much, there has always been a little part of me that desired to go back overseas to work and live. Yet, I am not sure it’s the appropriate choice for us right now, especially now that we have a family of our own. It has certainly caused my view on God’s mission field to change.
In the however-many-odd years since my time in Honduras, God has opened my eyes to what a mission field truly can be. We just have to let Him work in and through us. I quickly realized when I joined the workforce how much God’s mission field is all around us. Every single day, I make a conscious effort to give my job, my family, and all parts of my life over to God. I want God to use me in whatever setting I am a part of, and currently that is working at Front Range Christian School. That is now my mission field. No matter where you work, God can use you for His mission to grow His kingdom and bring Him glory.
My challenge to you is to make a conscious decision every day to let God use you in your work—no matter what you do. Maybe that’s a desk job, or physical labor, or even just raising your kids (that’s the hardest work there is 😉). We are called to further God’s Kingdom, and that can be done in your job, day in and day out. Use this opportunity to show God’s love to those around you, allowing them to see you use your work to further God’s kingdom.
God bless you! Go out, and let God use you in your everyday work.
