My understanding of Christian education has changed a lot in 20 years. When I first began this journey as a Christian educator, I loved the idea of integrating faith in God into the everyday fabric of my classroom. I loved chapel, teaching the Bible, praying before meals, and weaving the creation account into science lessons. Now, I realize that it is all of that and more.
It is taking each opportunity in the day to point back to God. I see it in everyday elementary classroom lessons from literature to social studies. Where do we see God at work in history? How does Charlotte (in Charlotte’s Web) show us unconditional love that reminds us of Jesus? Then there are the things we talk about that will never receive a grade but are perhaps the most important discussions of all: What do you think God is calling you to do (now and in the future)? What passion has He placed in your heart for you to do for the Kingdom? Things like calling and purpose… This is Christian education at its core. And it happens in our halls and classrooms every day.
Education matters and makes a difference in our world. Christian education takes it one step further — it makes a difference in our world both now and eternally.
