It is such a privilege to be able to share a few thoughts with the FRCS Community. As I think about “a word” for the community, a couple of words come to mind: Legacy and Impact.
First, a little bit of background on me. I was raised in a Christian home and attended a Christian school—very similar to FRCS—from K-6. Even though I was young, I understood that my parents cared enough for me to pour their time, money, and energy into my future. Coming from a middle-class family, resources were tight, and tuition wasn’t free. In addition to the financial cost, my parents spent countless hours arranging carpools or driving across town, while many of the neighborhood kids could simply walk or catch the school bus. Why? Why would they be willing to make that sacrifice? For the very same reason my wife and I have made the same decision.
As parents, we want our children to get a good education, have a well-rounded social life, and be able to participate in school activities, etc. FRCS delivers all these items daily. These things are as easily identifiable through participation in school plays, various sporting events, or the hours spent on homework. What is really happening though? Deeper than the surface, seeds are being planted, roots are beginning to grow, and the fruit of such efforts may not be evident until years later.
I am reminded of the story in Luke 6:46:
“They are like a man building a house, who dug down deep an laid the foundation on rock. When a flood came, the torrent struck that house but could not shake it, because it was well built.”
I am also reminded of the parable of the Sower in Matthew 13 which chronicles seed that was sown in various types of soil and conditions. Such is that with the seed of the word planted into the fertile hearts of our children so that:
“… the seed fell on good soil, where it produced a crop—a hundred, sixty, or thirty times what was sown.”
The impact that we have on our children today will produce a legacy not only for them but for their children as well. In a time where the world is planting its own seeds of lies, anxiety, selfishness, and fear, it is not only good, but necessary, that we plant the seeds of truth, peace, selflessness, and boldness into the lives of our children. The way to do this is through a firm foundation on Christ.
I cannot think of a better return on eternal investment than to pour my time, talent, and treasure into the life of my children. The foundation that we are building now will help them through the inevitable challenges of this life, and will give them the firm footing to withstand what the world will throw their way.
As we all know, everything in this life has a cost. I want to encourage and congratulate each one of you as parents, and members of the FRCS team, for recognizing the cost and deciding that it was worth paying the price. It certainly made an impact on me as a child, and I am grateful to be passing along the same legacy of faith and a Christian education to my family.
So, I leave you with this question… what impact are you having on your children today, and what legacy do you want to leave for their future?
