January Term, or J-Term, is an opportunity to recapture the curiosity of learning and explore experiential and project-based education. While some classes, like Psychology, explore traditional educational applications such as social sciences, other classes, such as Welding, explore learning in venues that used to be included in a traditional liberal arts education. J-Term classes will run for 4 days in January.
J-Term week is a regular week of school and full-time students* are expected to sign up for all three sessions: A, B, and C. Course space is limited, so we ask that students select a first and second choice from the options in each session. If a student’s first two choices fill up, we will contact him/her to ask for third and fourth choices. NOTE: AP Classes have specific seminars for their courses. Please note the times these are happening and sign up for J-Term courses accordingly.
Students earn transcript elective credit in the areas of Fine Arts, Common Arts and Physical Education for their J-Term. These courses are graded on a Pass/Fail (70 or above) basis and punctual attendance, participation, and completion of work are expected. Since this is an academic week of school, attendance is taken and counts toward a student’s overall attendance record (please see the FRCS Jr/Sr High attendance policy for details). If a student misses two or more days of J-Term due to illness or other excused reasons, they will be withdrawn from their courses and receive no academic credit for the J-Term week.
Specific information about J-Term is sent to families via email toward the end of each calendar year. Information includes available courses for that J-Term as well as instructions for students on how to sign up for the courses they want.
