There is a lot that I love about this school community. The mission and vision of the school, the focus on genuine discipleship, and the way that learning is treated as a lofty endeavor are a few aspects that come to my mind quickly. The thing that undergirds all of this is the culture of the staff and faculty, and it is worth praising here. The teachers are the backbone of this place (not handbooks or policies or spreadsheets), and they know how to chase after good learning environments. They know how to play well, how to challenge students, and how to give second chances. They are fun to work with, and they are worth working for.
Five books, other than the Bible, that have impacted my faith or career.
- Wisdom and Eloquence by Robert Littlejohn and Charles T. Evans
- Piety and Philosophy by Richard Riesen
- Just Teaching by Jon Eckert
- The Coddling of the American Mind by Greg Lukianoff and Jonathan Haidt
- The Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling
My wife (Naomi) and I enjoy a variety of sports and outdoor activities such as biking, hiking, skiing, paddle-boarding, climbing, and camping. Colorado is a beautiful state to pursue these activities, and we love living here. I get excited over any chance to do woodworking, and I also enjoy working on the house and the car. My wife and I both find life in playing board games and card games, but that is more about our friends than it is about the games. When I’m not reprimanding teachers (kidding), I’m probably reading a book or working with my hands. Recently, I have particularly enjoyed books relating to teaching, pedagogy, and philosophy of education. I’m typically up for trying new things (this applies to education, too!).
I play the harmonica, but only when I’m sure that no students are watching.
